Beat Gesture
Melisa Allela
The Stance (The Hearth Bend) The performer engages in a deep functional hinge at the hips, lowering the center of gravity while keeping the feet planted wide for stability. The knees bend slightly to accommodate the height of the stove, bringing the upper body into intimate proximity with the jiko’s opening (the mlango) to inspect the spark without inhaling smoke.
Manual Aeration (The Fan) Once the kindling catches, the dominant hand adopts a tool—typically a piece of cardboard or a plastic lid—converting it into a rotary fan. The wrist locks slightly, allowing the elbow to drive a rapid, oscillating motion near the air intake. This rhythmic fanning is forceful yet precise, designed to force oxygen into the embers without extinguishing the fragile initial flame.
Oral Aeration (The Bellows) In the early stages, the performer may lean further in, pursing the lips to deliver a focused, concentrated stream of air directly onto a glowing coal. This action requires breath control and timed withdrawal to avoid the rising ash and sudden flare-ups.
